Living in Iowa, I have gotten a lot of chuckles out of certain local customs such as backing cars and trucks into parking spaces so that you can always pull out of the space nose first. On the one hand, its practical--get in/get out and nobody gets rammed by being backed into. But on the other hand, it inconveniences some other driver who has to wait for you to perform that maneuver.
However, today I saw some dumb ass stuff that just doesn't make any sense. First thing this morning I'm waiting for a friend to meet me at a local restaurant for early breakfast. When I get out of my car, there is a good-sized diesel pickup idling next to me. A few seconds later, another guy pulls up to a curb and leaves his truck running. I need to point out that the restaurant shares a lot with a convenience station that sells fuel. The current cost of a gallon of regular gas is $2.84. So while I'm waiting, ten minutes go by and neither driver returns to their trucks. This means that these two trucks are burning up gas for no good reason, polluting the air and costing these guys a few bucks. Fast-forward to later on at lunchtime when I'm out taking a walk and I notice a car in the parking lot with the owner on their cell phone with, you guessed it, their motor running--and not in a hurry to go anywhere either,
To those gentle folks, I merely ask, "What the hell were you thinking?" Burning up fossil fuel and adding more CO2 to the air with what scientists have shown us is just shitty peopling. Do us all a favor and duck into your garages and pull the doors down behind you the next time you decide to keep your vehicles running. You'd be doing us all a favor.
