When I was a kid, juvenile scoliosis was a concern. I remember my siblings and I being evaluated for it and then given exercises to allow our growing bodies to adjust to our family's gene pool imperfection (that turned out to be a result of uneven leg length, not a spinal deformity). Nonetheless, our postures had a lot to be desired and so, in that spirit, each evening we went through a battery of corrective exercises. The one that I remember most required me to stand adjacent to our sturdy dining room table, hoist my inside leg up on it (bent at the knee), then lean down stretching my arms downward touching my toes and holding for a count of ten. This was repeated ten times and then I turned to the other side and repeated the process. I remember it making my groin muscles burn and feel strained and my back muscles experiencing a similar unpleasant feeling. I detested it immensely and often would procrastinate (or even just not do them, but swear to Zeus that I had).
I don't remember how long I had to do this repetitious, pain-inducing ritual--and the kindred other exercises designed to make me less slouchy. However, suffice it to say I never forgot the experience, referred to as corrections by the doctor.
On a rare occasion, I have made an error or two that I needed to amend when it was brought to my attention. As many do in such cases, I'll invoke "I stand corrected" to acknowledge my goof. However, in my particular case, it is literally the truth, as well as a figure of speech. I stand corrected.
