Bird Feeder Mystery

For several days, our solitary bird feeder has been under siege from what I can only describe as guttersnipes--creatures who have the ability to climb our rusty old clothes line pole, slide our green cylindrical feeder to the end of the cross post and down to the ground where they likely are feasting on the bird seed explosion that they have caused. In my imagination they are gleeful and greedy.

However, what is perplexing to me is who these guttersnipes may be. Squirrels would be the usual suspects because they generally are the havoc causers around our house. However, squirrels are not stealthy and tend to make quite a bit of noise when they come around. The lack of noise tells me it isn't the squirrels.

Then, I considered that it may be the raccoons. However this theory falls flat when you consider that this is a metal clothes line tee post and raccoons are generally unable to maneuver such poles. Also, they too are noisy buggers and, again, noise is not part of the culprit's or culprits' MO.

This leads me to my third hypothesis. Crows are behind this. Crows, while often noisy, can engage in stealth behavior and are large and smart enough to send a bird feeder crashing to the ground below and dine to their hearts' content. Plus, it is bird food so all signs point to a bird invasion.

Until I get down to the bottom of it, I have moved the feeder to a point where a bolt is keeping it from being slid off the tee post. If whatever it is is able to get it over the bolt, I will have a greater cause for concern! You hear that--you guttersnipes?
