Marriages end more times than not due to failed communications between the partners. At some point or another, people forget how to listen or empathize and this leads to a family systems collapse. It appears that this may be happening on a large-scale to our modern society. I would attribute part this to information overload. We simply have too many things coming at us at once to adequately process what it means and what our reasonable reaction to it may be.
Greater than you or I is how large groups of people handle the onslaught from smartphones, social media, apps, websites, cable/tv channels, and words out of the horse's mouth. At the least we are distracted and at the most, we are disconnecting in terms of genuine care of others. This is putting us in a heightened state of insecurity and leaving more and more up to our "old" brains to process.
The back and forth of healthy communication is being replaced by a fight or flight response. Since I have been taken a breather from social media, I still have the jittery feeling that everything I read, I want to share to Facebook or other platform and await the "likes" that inevitably follow thanks to the digital dividing the happens on that platform. Still, what is worse, an echo chamber that largely agrees with most every one of your thoughts or the Roman Coliseum of comment walls that leads to endless trolling? Have we joined the urban myth of lemmings and jumped off the communication cliff? Or are we just Dodos in waiting?
